What is FIP?

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a devastating disease caused by a mutation of feline coronavirus (FCoV). While FCoV is highly prevalent and contagious among cats, FIP itself is not contagious.

Only about 5-10% of cats exposed to feline coronavirus develop FIP. The disease can appear weeks, months or even years after initial exposure. While the exact causes of why some cats develop FIP while others don’t are still not fully understood, it appears most commonly in:

Kittens & young cats under 2 years old
Pedigree cats (due to genetic predisposition)
Cats in multi-cat households, catteries, or shelters

FIP can show up in different ways, but common early symptoms include:

Lethargy & fever that won’t go away

Two Main Forms of FIP

Once the virus mutates, it triggers an abnormal immune response, leading to widespread inflammation and damage to organs. FIP can appear in two main forms:

Wet (Effusive) FIP
Causes fluid buildup in the abdomen or chest and sometimes around the heart. This can result in a swollen belly or difficulty breathing.
Dry (Non-Effusive) FIP

Involves inflammation in various organs like the brain, eyes, liver, intestines or others, often leading to neurological symptoms, vision changes, or organ failure.

  • A cat’s eyes may appear cloudy, bloody, or have uneven pupil sizes, and the cat may show signs of pain, like squinting or keeping their eyes closed. This is commonly referred to as ocular FIP.
  • If the brain or spinal cord is affected (neurological FIP), cats may show signs such as seizures, a wobbly gait, behavioral changes, or trembling.

Some cats can have a combination of both “wet” and “dry” forms of FIP, and may have pale or yellow-tinged gums.

For a while, there was no effective legal treatment for FIP. However, recent advancements in veterinary medicine have brought hope to pet owners and their cats.

GS-441524 for Treating FIP

GS-441524 is an antiviral medication that has proven to be a breakthrough treatment for FIP, with an 85%+ success rate in helping cats recover.

GS-441524 works by inhibiting the replication of the FIP virus, allowing the cat’s immune system to fight off the disease. It has shown effectiveness in both the "wet" (effusive) and "dry" (non-effusive) forms of FIP, including ocular and neurological cases.

Based on current recommendations, cats are typically treated for 12 weeks on GS-441524. FIP symptoms should start to improve within 48-72 hours after starting treatment.

It’s important to note that while no FIP medications are FDA-approved, veterinarians can legally prescribe it through compounding pharmacies like Mixlab.

Other FIP Treatment Options

While GS-441524 remains the gold standard for FIP treatment, supportive care such as fluids and pain management may also be recommended, especially in the early stages of the disease. In some cases, additional medications may be used to manage symptoms like fever or inflammation.
